Saint George Trek - Philmont 2009

July 21, 2009 thru August 5, 2009

The Catholic Committee on Scouting of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles through its affiliation with the National Catholic Committee on Scouting (external link)  is pleased to announce a high adventure leadership program for older Catholic Boy Scouts and Venture Crew members at Philmont Scout Ranch in northeastern New Mexico from July 21, 2009 thru August 5, 2009.

Designed to develop organizational and relational skills for leadership as well as nourishing the scout's spirituality, the program will bring senior youth from around the country together with selected priests and seminarians for eight days of backpacking on the trail and three days of intensive leadership training at a back country base camp. Three days will be spent at the Madonna Retreat House in Albuquerque, New Mexico preparing for the trek.

In its entirety the program encourages the integration of morality and values, spirituality and faith, and scripture with the responsibilities of Christian Leadership and vocations. Participants will be asked to carry this meaningful experience home with them and become effective peer leaders in their diocese.

The Catholic Committee on Scouting for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles is making available two partial scholarships to the Saint George Trek for qualified Scouts and Venturers. The scholarships provide payment of the seven hundred fifty dollar ($750.00) national program fee. Transportation and incidental expenses are the responsibility of the participant.

Catholic Boy Scouts and Venturers who will be fifteen years of age on or before July 21, 2009 and in High School in the fall of 2009 are eligible to apply. Selection will be made on the basis of demonstrated leadership potential, reception of Scouting's religious emblems, and involvement in church, Catholic Scouting, school and community activities. Girls in Venturing are encouraged to apply as an all-female crew is planned. The decision of the Archdiocesan Screening Committee is final.

Application forms and information may be obtained by contacting Bill Cole, CCSALA Vice Chair at (818) 715-2007 or vicechair@ccsala.org
